METRO was declared the Gold Winner in both Bus Safety Excellence and Bus Security Excellence by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). These prestigious awards recognize transit providers as models of excellence in the industry for their innovative and proactive safety and security programs.

The APTA Bus and Rail Safety & Security Excellence Awards help build the industry by benchmarking successful programs so other systems can implement and fine-tune their programs based on the findings of their peers. Excellence Awards nominations are evaluated on four criteria: effectiveness, benefit level, innovation, and transferability. The top honor is the Gold Award, which is presented to organizations with the best example of a safety or security program.

“As an organization, our highest priority is safety. I am thankful to the entire METRO team, led by METRO Transit Police Chief Shawn Metcalf, for their hard work and dedication to ensure buses and facilities are safe spaces for everyone,” said METRO CEO Dawn Distler. “These Excellence Awards are a direct reflection of our daily commitment and dedication to safety and security efforts.”

“Our team has made significant strides in safety and security over the past year,” said Transit Police Chief Shawn Metcalf. “I’m grateful for our partnerships with the Akron Police Department and Summit County Sherriff’s Office, which have helped support our safety and security efforts. This is more than a win for METRO; it’s a win for our community.”
